Alpha Kappa Alpha: A Legacy of Service, Sisterhood, and Excellence

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) is a historically Black Greek-lettered organization, established in 1908 at Howard University by nine visionary college women. With over 300,000 members worldwide, AKA has become a force for positive change, fostering high scholastic achievement, ethical leadership, and impactful community service.

A Legacy of Firsts

Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first Greek-lettered organization founded by and for Black college women. This groundbreaking act paved the way for other Black sororities and fraternities, creating spaces for Black students to connect, grow, and support each other. Additionally, AKA boasts a long list of "firsts" among its members, including the first Black woman law professor, the first Black woman U.S. ambassador, and the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress.

Commitment to Service

AKA is dedicated to serving all mankind. Through its five international program initiatives, AKA focuses on:

• Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness: Raising awareness and funds for research and treatment.

• Walk MS: Participating in walks to support individuals living with multiple sclerosis.

• Coats for Kids: Providing warm winter coats to children in need.

• Backpack Attack: Supplying students with backpacks and school supplies.

• Senior Care: Providing services and companionship to senior citizens.

Sisterhood and Support

Alpha Kappa Alpha fosters a strong bond of sisterhood among its members. This supportive network provides women with a sense of belonging, encouragement, and mentorship. AKA sisters empower each other to achieve their personal and professional goals.
